"What's It Like? Wednesday" Living on a Farm?

Welcome back to another addition of "What's It Like? Wednesday", where you, my faithful readers, become the experts!

This week's topic is Living on a Farm.

As a child, I often visited my great uncle's farm where we fed the chickens, goat, cow, and played on the farm equipment.  I remember just loving the wide open space and the fresh air!  Outside of visiting a farm, I always lived in houses that were situated in neighborhoods.  Farms were always a novelty and treat to visit, but I have no idea what it means to take care of one farm animal, let alone live on the farm.  Growing up in the a small town, in a country like setting, I had many friends that raised animals and then showed them at the 4-H Youth Fair every year.  The fair was one of the major highlight events of the year in our area and everyone went.  Again, loved to look at the animals, but NO idea what it took to take care of them.
Now that I am am adult and have a family of my own, I just love visiting the farm.  Recently, I have been making a greater effort to support our local farms by purchasing our meat and produce from them instead of the mass market grocery stores. Today, I even put our first deposit down on half a hog!  I admit, I am super excited that we will be getting meat from a local, organic family farm! In the next week, we will be purchasing 1/8 cow from a local family farm that neighbors the pig farm and again raises organic, grass-fed livestock!

So, this is where you come in.....Since, I don't foresee that we will be owning a farm in the near (or likely far) future, I would love to know from you what it is like to own or live on a farm?  Please tell me all the fun, not so fun and down and dirty facts of farming!

  1. That is AWESOME that you are getting organic beef and 1/8 of a cow. How long do you think that will last you? We don't live on a farm, but my husband grew up with his grandparents owning a farm. I grew up raising chickens. It was great for fresh eggs and barely any bugs outside (the chickens ate everything...even ticks)! It wasn't great when hawks would swoop down and pick up your favorite pet chicken right in front of you! :(

  3. Living on a farm always sounds appealing to me but honestly, I think I don't have a real clue what it would be like. I imagine it's like everything else in life- there are positives but also lots of negatives. You're probably in for a lot more physical labor than any city living would involve.

  4. I grew up on a farm, always loved it. Some day I would love to move back out to the country again and live on a farm!

  5. I used to vacation on my uncle's ranch in Montana until they sold it. I know that my cousins were always involved in helping with the work. One of the things I remember is that they moved sprinkler pipes. They were paid 10 cents a pipe or something like that. I thought it was really hard work because I tried to move one and I couldn't do it. Plus they always had to get up so early, even in the summer!
