Social Media: Sometimes It's Too Much To Handle

I am 30 and over the course of my life, I have seen our primary mode of communication transform. From the days of corded phones and letter writing to pagers and then cell phones, followed by the internet boom and instant messenger. Today our primary mode of communication is text messages, e-mails, social media, etc. We are a wired society.

I admit, I really love many things about the internet, especially social media. For instance, I currently live hundreds of miles away from my family/friends and the places I grew up and social media allows me to keep them up to date on what's happening with our family and the newest pictures of the kids with just a few clicks of a button. Maybe I want to know the weather forecast? That's easy, it just involves opening the app on my phone. I can even control my satellite receiver for our TV from my smartphone. I have used technology to track all my pregnancies from the very first tests through the birth of our children and document them growing every single day and share it with everyone we know. These things are priceless to me.

However, this post isn't about all the things I love about technology, especially social media. It's about how some days it's all too much. Some days I scroll through my news feed on Facebook and I'm overwhelmed by the tragedy the World around me endures on a daily basis.

Today was one of those days.

Tower of Guns Video Game Alpha Review & #Giveaway!

*Disclosure: I did not receive any compensation in exchange for posting and promoting this product review and giveaway.

I decided it would be fun to bring you a different genre of giveaway, a video game.  Since Savy Daddy loves to play games (well, he used to before the kids), so I figured that a lot of my fans out there might have men in there lives that would love to win this! According to Savy Daddy, it looks like a game that would be fun to play! Check out the below review and giveaway, provided by Charlie's Point of View!

Tower of Guns is rogue-like meets Doom meets some great humor. The game is currently in alpha state, which means it's not quite as awesome, or complete, as it will be one day. Despite that, and the fact that my laptop really wasn't great for handling it, it was a load of fun! In a sentence, if you're a fan of FPS games and want one that's always fresh, Tower of Guns is absolutely worth your money.

Note: I did not create the Lets Play video above, but it was very effective in showing the game off.

S.M.M. Review

As we all know, protecting your new smartphone, iPod, or iPad is extremely important!  When looking for something to protect my device, I also look for something that is attractive.
As soon as I started browsing the MyCustomCase.com site, I fell in love with their designs.  For my case, I choose the Samsung Galaxy S4 Durable Case in Cast Iron Black design.

After choosing it, I had the option of customizing the colors and monogram letter(s).  I chose to change the colors to match my blog colors (blue/green) and make the monogram the first letter of our last name "S" It was really easy and only took a few minutes.

Save Money, Time and the Environment with Filter Savings Club! Free One Month Trial!

*Disclosure: I was sent the item(s) in this post for review, free of charge. There was no exchange of money and the opinions are 100% my own.

Do you have one of those really popular but horribly costly and inconvenient filtered water pitchers in your home? If so, I encourage you to check out Filter Savings Club and start saving money and time today!

About Filter Savings Club (source: www.filtersavingsclub.com)

The problem:
People are paying too much for their jug filters. We hate the taste of tap water just as much as the next guy, that's why we always use filters. But why do we have to pay $10 bucks for a replacement filter when it only costs a few bucks to make? Because there has never been an alternative.
Don't get us started on all the unnecessary gizmos on your jug. There are a bunch of companies trying to sell you pitchers for 50 bucks with Intel core processors that remind you to change the filter, and guess what, you still always forget to change your filter.

The solution:
We partnered with a kick *** manufacturer to produce high quality activated carbon filters that are third party tested to the same standards as all the other guys.
At Filter Savings Club we don't have 15 levels of management, produce million dollar commercials, or pay top dollar for the top shelf at your local store. We sell directly to you, the consumer, and give you most of the savings (we gotta make a dollar too).
And guess who will never have to remember to buy a filter again? You! We send you replacement filters in the mail every time you need one. That just happened.

Andy Pandy Premium Bamboo Disposable Diapers products were driven by their love for the plant and their children.  Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world without any chemical fertilizers that is also soft yet strong. This makes it a great resource to use. Andy Pandy Diapers are biodegradable and eco-friendly, while being free of Phthalates, Latex or Antioxidants.  They are also 100% Chlorine Free and perfume free.  They are naturally hypoallergenic and antibacterial - making them perfect for even the most sensitive skins. The diapers are available in 4 sizes - Small, Medium, Large and X-Large.

The diapers are fitted for children from 6.5 lbs to 30+ lbs.  Their Small diaper is geared toward 6.5-17 lbs, Medium 13-22 lbs, Large 20-31 lbs and XL 26+ lbs.  Great at moisture wicking away from the skin while being soft and smooth against baby's bottom with a natural aloe liner.  The front of the diaper also features a moisture indicator to make it easier to track wet diapers for event the tiniest of babies!

S.M.M. Thoughts: Little A. was allergic to every disposable we could find at our local stores! She needed them because her daycare did not accept cloth diapers, so we were desperately trying to find one that didn't "burn" her little bottom.  Luckily, we ended up being able to find a few brands that work for her.  If we had known about Andy Pandy's, we definitely would have used them!  I just love that they are chemical free!

Free Birds DVD/Blu-Ray Combo Pack #Giveaway. Official DVD Release Date - February 4th!

*Disclosure: I was sent the item(s) in this post for review, free of charge. There was no exchange of money and the opinions are 100% my own.

Last November, Big N. and Savy Daddy went to see Free Birds in the movie theater.  They both really loved the movie, and my son came home quoting it. We are really excited that the DVD is being released on February 4th, as myself and Little A. have yet to see it.

Here is some fun about the movie from our sponsor!

Ten Things You Might Not Know About Turkeys
Get ready for Free Birds, coming to DVD and Blu-ray February 4th!
Who said Turkey season was over? From the Academy Award®-Winning producer of Shrek* comes a hilarious animated adventure about two turkeys from opposite sides of the tracks who travel back in time in order to keep their species off the Thanksgiving menu. Featuring an all-star voice cast, including Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson and Amy Poehler, Free Birds is loaded with laughs and stuffed with fun for the whole family!

In anticipation of the film’s Blu-ray and DVD release, we’ve compiled a list of fun turkey facts so you can better understand the ins and outs of the Free Birds gang!

1.      Turkeys need to be trained to eat. In order for turkeys to reach their biggest size, they must be taught to eat small meals throughout the day, instead of their natural routine of consistently gorging themselves on food.

2.      A turkey’s snood (red thing attached to the beak) serves no functional purpose.

3.      A turkey’s gobble can be heard from a mile away. Talk about a loud mouth!

4.      Young turkeys are called “poults.”

5.      Turkeys were domesticated by Native Americans in pre-Columbian Mexico,
more than 500 years ago. They arrived in Spain in 1519 and quickly spread to the rest of Europe.

6.      Turkeys prefer to sleep in trees. They do this as a way of avoiding predators in the wild.

7.      Female turkeys (hens) do not gobble. Instead, they communicate through low-chirps and clicking noises.

8.      Wild turkeys can fly. They are actually quite fast, reaching speeds as fast as 55mph.

9.      Turkeys can blush. This usually takes place when they are frightened, agitated, excited, or ill. And here we thought they were just bashful!

10.  A turkey’s stomach has a container called the gizzard. It contains small stones the turkey has swallowed which help aid with breaking down food for digestion, since the birds do not have teeth.

Check out Free Birds when it trots it way onto Blu-ray and DVD February 4th!

Prior to the release I am offering you an opportunity to win a Free Birds DVD/Blu-ray Combo Pack!

Witnessing a Miracle: Our Lives Will Never be the Same - Part Two

In case you missed it yesterday, this is the second part and conclusion of Witnessing a Miracle: Our Lives Will Never be the Same. You can catch up by quickly reading Part One here.

My last post left us at hour 47 of her hospital admission and the discovery that her urine culture contained Group B Strep. The lab had confirmed it. Immediately upon being given these results, my mind flashed to the pamphlet that my OB gave me about it. Since I am Type A and have to research everything a million times, I knew exactly what that pamphlet said about this virus.  It said that it causes severe illness and the best outcome usually involves brain damage of some sorts.  Mommy panic overdrive! I collapsed onto the couch in her NICU room and the doctors sat beside me and explained what it meant.

The Neonatologist said this "You have a very special little girl. The culture count is only 3,000 and in order to exhibit any symptoms from it, the count is usually 50,000 or greater, which is why most babies with Late Onset Group B Strep aren't identified until between 2-3 months old when they come to the hospital with a life-threatening illness that the virus has caused. So, we don't believe this is what is causing the fever." She would need 10 straight days of antibiotics to be sure the infection was gone, but her fever was still climbing after being given antibiotics and it peaked around the 72 hour mark at 104 degrees. The doctors and nurses looked worried. My pediatrician warned that she may already have meningitis, even though initial test was negative. They drew blood again to check, it was negative, thank goodness. She experienced a middle of the night bloat of her belly which brought in portable x-ray machines and the Chief Neonatologist at 3:30am to check for an obstruction in her bowels. I was a mess and alone. Thankfully that came back normal and they put a NG tube into her belly to release the pressure which they say was likely the result of a combination of high doses of Tylenol and antibiotics.

In the meanwhile, the lab was determining if the antibiotic being administered was effective on the strain she was carrying. It was. This charade of "what's causing it" went on for four days. The flu? Negative. RSV? Negative. Finally, after four days her fever broke.  I'll never forget that moment when I woke up from a 2 to 3 hour stretch of sleep and the nurse came in and looked at my husband whom I had asked to spend the night with us at the hospital and said "You want to tell her the good news?" It turns out her fever had broke just hours before and her temperature was normal. I got up and walked across the room and looked at this beautiful baby who looked like she felt 100 times better. For the first time in four days there was a light at the end of this tunnel. A huge weight was lifted! Over the course of the next six days, she was given a voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) to determine if her bladder/kidneys were working properly, as well as a final urine culture to confirm the Group B Strep was gone.  Her fever never came back.

So, why call this a miracle?

Witnessing A Miracle: Our Lives Will Never Be The Same - Part One

The night before.
December 11th, 2011 is a day that I will never forget.  It's not the date we were married or a day that one of our children was born.  It's the day that Little A. woke up at 5 am with a 101.5 degree fever.  She was so hot I knew she was feverish by just touching her torso when changing her diaper. I'll never forget that heat on my hands. The big problem: She was just shy of 12 days old.

I was unaware making the call to the pediatrician on call, what was to lie ahead. The good and the bad.

"Newborns don't naturally get fevers. Something is causing it" are the words that made my stomach drop down to my knees and the tears start flowing. It's these words and the slight panic from the doctor on call, followed by "You need to get her to the ER immediately" that made me want to run in the opposite direction. Not only was my baby 12 days old, and I exhausted at 12 days post-partum, but I was also battling a fierce case of bi-lateral mastitis. This had to be a bad dream...

It wasn't, so we called for someone to come stay with our oldest and off we rushed to the hospital.  Upon arrival, we were immediately wisked in, where Little A. (and her parents) were put through a battery of tests that are standard when a newborn (any baby under 2 months) spikes a fever. These range from the expected temperature and respiratory checks to the very unexpected blood culture and spinal tap. Apparently newborn's nervous system is too immature to even feel a spinal tap. That didn't make me feel any better at the time. She was my tiny new baby and I was doing everything I could to hold it together.

Little A. was also very dehydrated (fevers in newborns can due this in a matter of hours) and so she needed fluids immediately BUT of course dehydration leads to very small veins and in newborns the veins were already small.  A dozen sticks later and still no I.V. Finally, someone thought to call the nurses from NICU and like angels from heaven they came down to our rescue.  They took a look around the room and looked into my eyes and said "We are going to look for a good vein, if we don't find one, we are not sticking her anymore. We will find another solution" They couldn't find one...and the ER doctor threatened to shave her hair to put one in her head. I cried.

S.M.M. Review

I received a huge variety of flavors (15) for my review.

Parents vs. Public: What it takes to end the war!

There is a story going around the internet about a Chicago chef at a 3-star restaurant who tweeted about an 8 month old baby disturbing his customers. Here is the link if you want to read it: http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/24934994-418/couple-criticized-for-bringing-crying-baby-to-3-star-restaurant.html

Of course, like wildfire both sides of the Parents vs. Public war started their attack.  So, what do I, a mother of 3 young children, think of this?  In this case, I think the parents made a bad choice, but in general, here is my response to both sides.

Dear Public: Let's get real here! You have gotten out of control in complaining about babies and kids disrupting you in PUBLIC places. I'm not talking about upscale restaurants or movies (PG13+) that young children clearly don't belong.  I'm talking about places like airplanes, kids movies, family restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores and much more! Too many times lately I have seen/experienced in person or on the internet a case of someone getting upset about a crying baby or screaming toddler bothering them in one of these places and frankly it's ridiculous.  Do you honestly think that the parents of the baby/kid want them disrupting you?  Or better yet, do you think they went their with the pure goal of having to dealing with a screaming child?

SoCoolKids Soaps Review & #Giveaway!

About SoCoolKids (source: www.socoolkids.com)

Influenced by a close-up photograph I snapped of my young son while sharing a late summer afternoon lunch at the beach, I founded the company, SoCoolKids, in 2012. Dampened by the ocean, his wet hair brushed from his face, the fresh image resembled an advertisement for skin and hair care! For months, I began noticing children's ads and marketing; and wondered why they all seemed either animated or graphic -- and, not reflective of children's inherent beauty.

Inspired by CoverGirl, and the clean, natural images that drove their iconic marketing campaign, I developed a Skin and Hair Care Product-line geared to the unique needs and tastes of children.

Made in the USA, in Los Angeles and upstate New York, SoCoolKids products maintain the highest standard of performance. Both, my stepdaughters and son, revel in the casual romance of the Sun Valley Mountains and skies; and the vast California shores. Like its content, SoCoolKids' packaging encapsulates these experiences of the great outdoors.

SoCoolKids aspires to embrace children in all walks of life. The Product Line consists of: daily shampoo and everyday conditioner; watermelon, mango, orange and banana glycerin soaps -- the surf-sand soap relays the smell and feel of the beach -- with an exfoliating quality.

SoCoolKids's all-American, all-cotton t-shirts and sweatshirts provide a comfortable wear and ease of movement; and relaxed and classic aesthetic.

Live Naturally. Stay Beautiful. Be Cool!

I received the following goodies for review:
Immediately upon opening the box, the wonderful aromas of the soaps filled our home. My kids couldn't stop themselves from smelling all of the soaps again and again! Big N. decided his favorite was the Watermelon and Little A. really loved the Banana!
Here are some of my favorite things about these soaps:
