Up On the Hill: Kawaii Pure & Natural Cloth Diaper Review and Giveaway

Up On The Hill
I recently met a wonderful stay-at-home turned work-at-home mom, who owns a store that specializes in all natural and eco-friendly baby products, Up On the Hill.  Upon discussing a review and giveaway opportunity, the owner recommended I try one of their cloth diapers, the Kawaii Baby Pure & Natural.

Here are the details from Up On the Hill:
This diaper is ideal for baby from 0 to 15 months.
The Pure & Natural PN2 consists of 2 Parts - A Waterproof Outer Cover + 2 Absorbent Microfiber Inserts
Part 1:
Waterproof Outer Cover
Made of soft and durable TPU fabric. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is a composition specifically adapted to produce non-porous membranes exhibiting waterproof and water vapor transmissible. High performance, durable, excellent water-resistant, cut and tear resistance and soft.
New Features
Comfy Baby Design
  • Wider Pocket Opening for Easy Stuffing
  • Larger Laundry Tabs
  • Tummy Leakproof Panel - For babies sleeping on their tummy
Inner layer is made from a super soft suede cloth, which wicks moisture away from babies skin and keep bottom dry.
The Cover has a pocket opening located in the back inner layer to accommodate the microfiber inserts, once stuffed it is just like an (AIO) ALL IN ONE Diaper. The cover itself can also be use as a diaper cover over your favorite prefold or fitted diapers.
Adjustable Fit with Crossover Hook & Loop Tabs
There are 3 rows of snap buttons on the outer cover that will transform the diaper from small to medium and to large. Fit from 6-22lbs.
  • Size Small (6-10lbs) - Snap the top row button into the lowest row button
  • Size Medium (10-16lbs)- Snap the top row button into the middle row button
  • Size Large (16-22lbs) - Leave button un-snap
Part 2
Environmentally Friendly Microfiber Inserts
The Inserts (or soaker pads) are made from 100% unbleached microfiber. The material has many tiny strands and is environmentally friendly. It has 40x more absorbent surface than cotton and is less bulky. They are soft and easy to clean.
We include 2 Aborbent microfiber inserts in each diaper – one for daytime and the second for nighttime or heavy wetter.
The Cover/Outer Layer is made from a new and improved Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) Laminated Fabric. This fabric is highly water resistant, breathable and very durable. The inner layer is made from a super soft suede cloth, which wicks moisture away from babies skins and keep bottom dry.
The Cover has a pocket opening located in the back inner layer to accommodate the microfiber liners/inserts. When stuffed, it is just like an (AIO) ALL IN ONE diaper. The cover itself can also be use as a diaper cover over your favorite prefold or fitted diapers.
Laundry Tabs
This cloth diaper already comes with fold-back laundry tabs, an extra piece of loop tape that lets you fold the hook part of the tab back for washing. By folding the tab back and securing the hook part of the tape, you can keep the hook tape from catching on other diapers in the washer. Folding the tab back also lessens lint buildup in the hoop tape and prolongs the life of the fasteners.

Additional Adjustable Fit with Velcro Fasteners
The diaper can be adjusted to fit a baby weighing from 6-22lbs. An easy and flexible Velcro fastener can be folded down from the waist to create a even slimmer fit.

My experience:
Close up: design and adjustable fit snaps
Inside of cover and inserts
I am still a newbie to cloth diapering, as I have only tried one (very popular) brand prior to this diaper.  Upon initially receiving the diaper, I noticed two things: look and feel. This diaper was really cute on the outside and I felt like it truly was gender neutral, which is important to me as I believe that baby items should be used for more than one child if possible.  Once I got past the nice design, I couldn't get over how soft every piece of this diaper is.  From the outside of the cover to the inside and don't get me started on the microfiber inserts.  I honestly considered hoarding them to sleep on at night they are so soft!!

After properly prepping this diaper I tried it out on my daughter (9.5 months, 19 lbs.).  My biggest issue with my previous cloth diaper experience (another brand) was the fit didn't work (too tight) for my son and left these awful red marks on his legs (he wasn't a big baby at all).  This diaper was completely different!  I only used one insert for the first run and it fit so perfectly!  I could tell that she loved it too as she was strutting her stuff all over our house.

Now, I know the biggest thing you are thinking is "Did it keep her dry?"  The answer is "Absolutely!"  In fact, we were able to keep her in it for a few hours through a nap, with only one insert, and you couldn't even tell it was wet!  The second time we used it, she decided to really leave us a treat and it was really easy to discard the waste in the toilet.
The only thing that I would consider doing to try and extend the use of the cover is to lay the microfiber insert on the inside instead of stuffing the pocket or using prefolds.
Other than that (which is really a personal preference, not a complaint) my overall experience with this diaper was wonderful!  It is economical, easy to use/wash and very well designed. The last thing I want to mention is how affordable this diaper is!  For $8.50 you receive (1) cover and (2) inserts!

BosoBuddies Review and Giveaway!

As a parent or caretaker of a little baby, have you ever been frustrated by the fact that you are always laying the baby on top of the infant car-seat straps and then having to gently get those same straps out and around the front without either A.)Waking the baby or B.) Having the baby yell and scream at you. Or maybe you are one of those that was blessed with a child that just despises the car-seat?!  Well, I have solution for you: BosoBuddies!

What are they?
BosoBuddies strap to the handle of the infant seat and hold up the car-seat straps up and away from the seat, so you can safely and easily put the infant into the seat.

Ashley, the Owner and Creator of this nifty solution, was nice enough to give me the chance to fully review them and we love them!  Below is my experience:

How do they work?
As you can see below, they first fasten on each side of the car-seat handle (there is a quick instruction guide included for this step) and then you just hook one of the elastic loops (ribbon loop) under the strap and hook it around the button!  It's so easy, I could do it one handed!

Hooking up one of the straps  one-handed!

And when it's time to take the baby out, you just repeat those steps and it's ready to go for the next time you need to go somewhere!

Hooked up and ready for baby!
As an added bonus, they have created some really great styles that will go with any infant car-seat!

Overall, we really found this product to be extremely helpful and easy to use!  The only thing I will warn you about is making sure to keep little fingers away as my daughter found the elastic a time or two and started snapping it while I was driving. But, the easy solution for this is to just slide the BosoBuddies up near the top of the handle when not in use (since for safety you should always drive with the handle down) and the little one can't reach them :-)

The creator was not only kind to send me a set for review but she also sent a very cute (and what I consider gender neutral) set to giveaway to one of my lucky readers!

Fun Letters!

Last weekend, I decided I would do a quick and fun little project for the kids' rooms:  Letters!    I started out with some plan white letters from a local craft store

Nicholas already has a set of ready to hang store-bought blue and white striped letters on his wall, but since his room is an airplane theme, I wanted to add the word "FLY" to the wall.  For me, this word not only is a great addition to the theme, but it will also serve as a friendly reminder for him to not be afraid and "FLY" in life.  (Oh and I'm big into education, so you know we are using it to learn to read the word too!).

For Nicholas' I just used some leftover red paint in our basement (extra from our half bath) and painted the letters red. See below:

I had decided, I wanted the letters to look weathered and distressed, so I followed this up by buying a tube of Martha Stewart crackling effect gel.  After spreading the gel, I added some light blue paint (leftover from his walls) and wiped it off immediately.  This left the paint in the cracks only, or at least it should have.  I ended up getting distracted as our 9 month old was climbing the fireplace and had to jump off real quick and remove her and when I came back the paint had started to dry on the "L", so there is a little bit extra, but I think they still turned out pretty good.

For Audrey's room, I wanted to add her initials to her room.  For this project, I took blue painters tape and put it where I wanted the underneath to remain a white stripe.  Then I also used the leftover paint from her room and painted the lines in-between the paint.  This set was really easy as it only required two coats and it was ready.  It's not perfect, but I like to think it is perfectly homemade!

Overall, this project only cost around $13 (including the crackle bottle).  I have priced finished decorative letters around the stores and they can cost anywhere from $5-$10 each, so I figure I saved a good bit of cash, reused some old paint and have the pride of hanging something I made into their rooms!
